Aadhaar Tech Milestone Marks Digital Growth

India’s Aadhaar authentication framework has crossed a major threshold, recording over 150 billion cumulative transactions by the end of April 2025. The development marks a significant milestone for the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and reinforces Aadhaar’s pivotal role in powering the country’s digital economy and public welfare ecosystem.

Introduced as a voluntary identity infrastructure, Aadhaar has steadily expanded its reach across sectors, streamlining service delivery and enabling trusted identity verification at scale. In April alone, 210 crore Aadhaar-based authentications were completed—an 8% increase from the same period in 2024—highlighting consistent user adoption.

Digital onboarding powered by e-KYC

A key component of this authentication ecosystem is e-KYC, which is helping simplify customer onboarding across banking, telecom, and fintech sectors. In April 2025, 37.3 crore e-KYC transactions were recorded, representing a 39.7% year-on-year growth. This surge points to increasing reliance on paperless, digital onboarding mechanisms among businesses and service providers.

As of 30th April 2025, cumulative e-KYC transactions have surpassed 2,393 crore, underscoring the role of Aadhaar in facilitating regulatory-compliant identity verification that is both seamless and secure.

AI-powered face authentication gains ground

Another rapidly emerging feature within the Aadhaar stack is UIDAI’s AI/ML-based face authentication. Developed in-house, this modality enables contactless verification and is especially useful in contexts requiring minimal physical interaction. In April 2025, over 14 crore face authentication transactions were processed.

More than 100 organisations—spanning both government departments and private entities—have adopted this method to deliver services and benefits more efficiently. The continued growth in face authentication reflects not only the scalability of UIDAI’s digital architecture but also its alignment with privacy-aware, user-friendly digital public goods.

Together, these milestones position Aadhaar as a cornerstone of India’s digital infrastructure—enabling secure access, streamlining welfare distribution, and advancing digital inclusion at national scale.
