The Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) has entered into a partnership with GE HealthCare Technologies to launch a dedicated Cancer Research and Innovation Centre in India. The collaboration, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on Wednesday, is aimed at driving advancements in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and research.
GE HealthCare will act as the technology partner, bringing in advanced medical technologies, while TMC will serve as the clinical oncology partner. A Joint Working Group is expected to outline the centre’s key project areas and build a five-year strategic roadmap to guide its implementation.

India’s cancer burden underscores urgency
India is witnessing a rising incidence of cancer, with estimates from the National Cancer Registry Programme projecting a 12.8% increase in cases by 2025 compared to 2020. Currently, around 100 out of every 100,000 people in India are diagnosed with cancer annually. Despite policy-driven interventions such as the establishment of day care centres and awareness initiatives, early detection and equitable access to care remain major challenges.
Focus on AI, digital platforms, and personalised care
The upcoming centre will focus on developing and testing new technologies, including artificial intelligence tools for medical imaging, software and hardware for image analysis, and digital platforms for managing health data. These solutions are intended to improve early detection and diagnosis, support personalised treatment strategies, and optimise clinical workflows.
In addition to research and clinical care, the centre will work on enhancing health data infrastructure by integrating well-annotated clinical data into enterprise platforms. These efforts aim to strengthen the overall delivery and management of cancer care across India.
