In an exclusive interview with CXO XPERTS, cybersecurity veteran Kavitha Ayappan, shares her perspective on the practical challenges of AI implementation, evolving security blind spots, embedding governance into business culture, and how inclusive mentorship is shaping the future of women in cybersecurity.


As someone currently exploring AIMS and the AI Act, what are your thoughts on the practical challenges of implementing AI governance in highly regulated industries?

There is no doubt that artificial intelligence is reshaping how organizations operate, but I believe the intersection of AI governance, cybersecurity, and leadership is more important than ever—especially in highly regulated industries.

The biggest challenge is balancing innovation with compliance. AI systems often outpace regulatory frameworks, making it difficult to stay compliant as they evolve. Explainability is another critical hurdle—many deep learning models are still “black boxes,” which complicates audits and regulatory reporting.

On top of that, legal fragmentation across geographies forces organizations to tailor governance approaches differently—whether you’re aligning with the EU AI Act, China’s policies, or the NIST AI RMF. That’s why AI governance must be built into the design phase, with transparency, risk management, and cross-functional collaboration at the core.

Most importantly, organizations must define a clear purpose for AI—why it’s being used, how it’s measured, and whether its outcomes align with organizational values.

With AI rapidly integrating into enterprise systems, where do you think the security blind spots are emerging?

As AI weaves itself deeper into enterprise systems, new vulnerabilities are showing up in areas we haven’t traditionally monitored.

One of the biggest blind spots is the AI model supply chain. Many organizations are adopting third-party models and APIs without full clarity on where they come from or how secure they are. Another rising concern is shadow AI—unauthorized GenAI use by employees, which introduces risks around data leakage and compliance violations.

Traditional cybersecurity controls aren’t built to detect adversarial inputs, model inversion attacks, or prompt injection threats. Organizations need to evolve their threat models and invest in AI-specific security tooling, including red-teaming strategies tailored for AI.

How do you ensure that frameworks like ISO or NIST don’t become just another layer of bureaucracy?

If organizations adopt AI just to follow trends without a clear understanding of its purpose, then yes—standards like ISO or NIST risk becoming box-checking exercises.

However, when implemented thoughtfully, frameworks like ISO/IEC 42001 or the NIST AI Risk Management Framework can be powerful enablers. The key is to integrate them into governance workflows—not layer them on top. They should help prioritize risk, structure decision-making, and build accountability.

In my view, every framework should be embedded in work culture. Governance should never feel separate from innovation. When people see it as an extension of business strategy, it becomes a driver—not a drag.

Has your leadership style evolved over time as you’ve moved from consulting to heading global security programs?

Absolutely. Consulting taught me how to influence without authority—how to frame insights in a way that drives change. But leading global security programs is about operational resilience, long-term impact, and people development.

I’ve become more focused on creating psychological safety, enabling expertise in others, and building high-trust environments. Today, leadership to me means being a catalyst—removing roadblocks, amplifying talent, and shaping secure, inclusive systems.

It’s not just about the “what” and “why” anymore—it’s about the “how.” That includes mentorship, cross-functional clarity, and cultivating accountability across all layers of the team.

What’s your take on how mentorship can evolve in the cybersecurity space—especially for women who want to specialize in GRC, AI, or privacy law?

Mentorship needs to move beyond just advice—it needs to become active sponsorship. We need mentors who open doors, recommend women for key projects, and advocate for them in decision-making rooms.

Second, we should rethink what a mentor looks like. Sometimes your best mentor is a peer. Reverse mentoring and cross-functional learning can be incredibly powerful—especially in fields like AI ethics or GRC, which are evolving rapidly.

Third, mentorship must be practical. Shadowing a DPIA, participating in an audit, or joining a breach simulation exercise provides real-world exposure that builds confidence.

Lastly, mentorship must be inclusive. We need safe spaces for women—not just in terms of gender, but also for neurodiverse professionals, non-linear career journeys, and first-gen tech leaders. That’s why I stay actively involved in mentoring through WiCyS, SRM University, and other professional communities.

What practical advice would you give to women in cybersecurity?

  1. Own your story. Whether you’re from a legal, policy, or engineering background—your voice matters. Don’t shrink to fit the mold.

  2. Step into discomfort. Growth comes from trying things that stretch you—take that stretch assignment, lead that review, give that talk.

  3. Build your brand. Visibility builds credibility. Write. Speak. Mentor. Share your voice—others are watching and learning.

  4. Find your people. Seek mentors, sponsors, and peer circles. You need all three.

  5. Learn the business. Know how security links to revenue, risk, and mission. Speak the language of the boardroom.

  6. Lift others as you grow. Recommend women for roles. Share knowledge generously. Make space. When you rise, take others with you.
