ISACA Launches AI Audit Certification for CISAs and CPAs

In response to growing demand for AI expertise among audit professionals, ISACA has launched a new certification—Advanced in AI Audit (AAIA)—marking the first advanced, audit-specific credential focused on artificial intelligence. The certification is aimed at experienced professionals holding credentials such as CISA, CIA, or CPA, who are looking to deepen their expertise in auditing AI systems, mitigating risk, and enhancing compliance in AI-driven environments.

The launch comes as AI literacy tops LinkedIn’s list of the 15 fastest-growing skills, reflecting the urgent need for upskilling in an increasingly AI-integrated workplace. According to a recent ISACA survey, 85% of digital trust professionals, including auditors, said they would need to increase their AI knowledge within two years to stay competitive, while 94% agreed that AI skills are essential for future success.

Credential designed for practical, real-world application

The AAIA certification validates the ability to conduct AI-specific audits, manage AI governance and risk, and apply advanced auditing tools and techniques to streamline operations. In addition to auditing AI systems, certified professionals can leverage AI to improve audit efficiency, reduce manual effort, and support faster, more accurate decision-making.

Eligibility for the AAIA includes holders of active CISA, CIA, or CPA credentials. The certification covers three core domains: AI governance and risk, AI operations, and AI auditing tools and techniques. Study resources include a Review Manual, an Online Review Course, and a QAE (Questions, Answers, and Explanations) database—available for one year of preparation.

Part of a wider AI credentialing and training ecosystem

The launch of AAIA is part of ISACA’s broader AI training initiative. The association has also released targeted offerings such as the Introduction to AI for Auditors, Auditing Generative AI courses, and an AI Audit Toolkit. A second AI-focused certification—Advanced in AI Security Management (AAISM)—is expected to launch in Q3 2025, aimed at professionals with CISM or CISSP backgrounds.

With over 55 years of global audit and assurance leadership, ISACA continues to evolve its certification and training programs to meet the fast-changing needs of digital governance, security, and compliance in the AI era.
