India Ranks in Top 6 for Global 6G Patent Filings

India has secured a spot among the top six nations globally for 6G patent filings, according to Union Minister of State for Telecom Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani. Speaking at the BHARAT 6G 2025 conference, he highlighted India’s significant strides in next-generation wireless technology, particularly through investments in R&D.

₹300 Crore Invested in 6G Research

The minister noted that over 111 research projects related to 6G development have been funded with a total allocation of ₹300 crore. Emphasising India’s talent potential and early preparation, Pemmasani said the country is well positioned to lead in global 6G innovation.

He further explained that 6G networks will utilise terahertz frequency bands to deliver speeds up to one terabit per second — about 100 times faster than current 5G technologies.

6G Seen as Key to India’s Economic Future

Pemmasani highlighted the transformative potential of 6G, estimating it could add $1 trillion to India’s economy by 2035. The development of indigenous 6G technology, he added, would also enhance national security by keeping critical communication systems within India’s control.

Calling for a bold approach, he said, “This mission must be transformative, not like any other. Let us build a 6G ecosystem that is made in India, made for the world, secure by design and transformative in impact.”

Bharat 6G Mission: Structured Roadmap for Leadership

India’s Bharat 6G Mission, launched in 2021, is being executed in two phases. The first phase (2023–2025) focuses on research and development, while the second (2025–2030) will support deployment of 6G infrastructure.

The Department of Telecommunications has established the Technology Innovation Group on 6G (TIG-6G), comprising stakeholders from industry, academia, and research institutions. Six dedicated task forces under TIG-6G are currently working on areas such as spectrum policy, device ecosystems, and international standards.

To ensure coordinated progress, an apex council is monitoring the mission, and a Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA) is also on the cards to foster deeper collaboration across the ecosystem.

India’s growing momentum in 6G places it at the forefront of the next telecom revolution, aiming to drive innovation that is scalable, secure, and globally relevant.
