Apple Blocks ₹77,000 Cr Fraud with App Store Defenses

Apple’s latest App Store Fraud Analysis Report reveals that the tech giant prevented nearly ₹77,000 crore (around $9 billion) in fraudulent transactions over the past five years, reinforcing its role as a leader in digital platform security. In 2024 alone, Apple stopped fraud attempts worth $2 billion, reflecting the growing complexity and scale of cyber threats targeting consumers through apps and online purchases.

The company credits its strong defense to a multi-layered security framework that includes advanced fraud detection, manual app reviews, and real-time monitoring across 175 countries. These systems are designed not just to identify and block malicious activity but to prevent harmful apps from ever reaching users in the first place.

Suspicious developer and user accounts removed at scale

Apple reported the termination of 1.46 lakh (146,000) developer accounts and 1.39 lakh (139,000) user accounts in 2024 alone, citing involvement in fraud or suspicious activities. Additionally, the company blocked 10,000 unauthorized apps that attempted to impersonate popular brands or trick users into sharing sensitive data.

These interventions reflect Apple’s strict enforcement of App Store policies, particularly against apps that manipulate guidelines or introduce hidden malware. The company’s systems are calibrated to identify fake accounts and apps that mimic trusted entities, ensuring users are less exposed to financial scams or phishing schemes.

Over 7 million apps reviewed, 1.9 million rejected

In 2024, the App Store reviewed 77 lakh (7.7 million) submitted apps, rejecting over 19 lakh (1.9 million) for failing to meet its standards. Reasons ranged from privacy violations and misleading interfaces to attempts at circumventing security protocols.
