Bharti Airtel has announced the successful deployment of its AI-powered fraud detection system in Mumbai, safeguarding over 2.1 million users within just 50 days of launch. The system automatically detects and blocks malicious links across SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, email, and web browsers in under 100 milliseconds—without requiring any user action.
By leveraging real-time threat intelligence, Airtel’s network examines over 1 billion URLs every day. When a suspicious link is detected, access is immediately blocked and the user is redirected to a warning page. The system operates silently in the background, offering protection to all Airtel mobile and broadband users free of charge.
Growing digital risks in a hyper-connected city
Mumbai, ranked among India’s most digitally active cities, faces increasing threats from phishing, fake delivery scams, and fraudulent banking alerts. Cybercriminals often target diverse demographics—from students and working professionals to homemakers and senior citizens—through misleading messages and malicious links.

Airtel’s initiative comes at a time when digital interactions are rapidly increasing across government, finance, and e-commerce sectors. The telecom giant’s proactive defence solution is being positioned as a statewide digital shield to mitigate these evolving threats.
Scalable model for national rollout
The AI-powered fraud detection framework has been designed for scalability and is part of Airtel’s broader national security strategy. By embedding this solution directly within the network infrastructure, Airtel aims to provide seamless protection without any software installation or user configuration.
As online fraud becomes more sophisticated, telecom networks are increasingly stepping up to serve as the first line of defence. Airtel’s system not only enhances digital trust in Mumbai, but also sets the stage for expanding real-time fraud prevention efforts across other major cities in India.
