Bharti Airtel has launched an AI-driven fraud detection system in Kerala, protecting over 1.6 million users within just 35 days of its rollout. The initiative, part of a nationwide strategy, uses real-time threat intelligence to block phishing links, malicious websites, and fraudulent communications across SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, social media, and browsers. The system scans over one billion URLs daily and blocks threats in under 100 milliseconds.
Statewide protection with multilingual alerts
Kerala, one of India’s most digitally connected states, has witnessed a surge in cyber fraud targeting users with fake banking alerts and phishing messages. Airtel’s platform, enabled by default for all mobile and broadband users, issues fraud alerts in local languages, including Malayalam. This multilingual support ensures accessibility even in districts with low digital literacy.
Cities such as Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kannur—as well as remote towns like Aranmula and Tanur—have seen growing online scams. The system is designed to protect vulnerable groups including senior citizens, homemakers, and first-time smartphone users.
Nationwide expansion and impact
Since its launch, Airtel’s system has blocked more than 1.88 lakh malicious links and shielded 86 million users across India. Gokul J, COO of Kerala, Bharti Airtel, described the AI tool as critical for delivering new, scalable protections against evolving cyber threats. The initiative reflects Airtel’s broader strategy to integrate AI into customer experience, fraud prevention, and network safety.
By prioritising proactive defence mechanisms, Airtel aims to reinforce trust and digital safety as more citizens embrace digital platforms for banking, shopping, and communication.
