Apple is preparing to allow third-party developers to integrate its proprietary AI models into their applications, marking a significant shift in the company’s AI strategy. According to Bloomberg, the tech giant will unveil a new software development kit (SDK) during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9, enabling developers to build features directly on top of Apple Intelligence.
This SDK is expected to empower iOS app developers to create AI-powered tools and experiences natively, leveraging Apple’s on-device and cloud-based AI systems. The move could accelerate AI adoption across Apple’s app ecosystem, bringing more advanced, personalised, and intelligent functionality to users of iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
Strategic catch-up in AI race with rivals
Apple’s expansion into AI developer tools comes amid growing scrutiny over its delayed entry into the generative AI space. While companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft have released consumer-facing models and tools, Apple has remained relatively quiet. The new SDK, along with plans to partner with AI firms, suggests Apple is preparing to close the gap.

In parallel, Apple is reportedly working on a suite of AI-driven features, including a battery optimisation mode and an AI-enabled health app. Hardware development is also underway, with new AI server chips, enhanced Mac processors, and wearable chips likely to enter production by late 2026 or 2027.
These server-side AI chips will process Apple Intelligence workloads before syncing them to user devices—highlighting Apple’s hybrid approach to AI infrastructure.
Collaborations and delays in virtual assistant rollout
Apple is also exploring partnerships to integrate third-party models into Apple Intelligence. Discussions are ongoing with OpenAI, Google (for Gemini), and Perplexity to enhance Safari’s AI capabilities. Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed collaboration efforts, while Apple CEO Tim Cook indicated that additional third-party models would be included later this year.
However, Apple is facing setbacks on its flagship AI project—an upgraded Siri. The major AI update to its virtual assistant has reportedly been delayed until 2026, due to unresolved bugs and engineering complexities.
As Apple prepares for its WWDC announcements, the integration of AI models into developer tools represents a pivotal moment in its strategy to regain relevance in the global AI landscape.
