Electronics to Become Largest Manufacturing Sector: Govt

India’s electronics industry is on track to become the largest manufacturing sector globally, with the government setting an ambitious target of $500 billion in annual production, according to S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Speaking at the inauguration of Zetwerk Electronics’ new manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, Krishnan emphasized the state’s role in driving India’s electronics expansion, stating that a quarter of the target production must come from Tamil Nadu to achieve the $500 billion milestone.

Tamil Nadu’s Growing Role in Electronics Manufacturing

Tamil Nadu has emerged as a frontrunner in India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem, with its high-quality human resources and strong infrastructure attracting major investments from global manufacturers.

“The most important factor attracting industries to this area is the quality of human resources and their ability to support manufacturers in expanding operations and exporting globally,” Krishnan said.

Zetwerk’s new factory—its seventh electronics facility in India—adds to the state’s growing list of manufacturing units in Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram, which Krishnan highlighted as potentially the country’s largest electronics manufacturing cluster.

PLI Scheme Driving Investments

Tamil Nadu has been a major beneficiary of India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has been instrumental in boosting domestic electronics manufacturing.

Krishnan pointed out that under the IT hardware PLI scheme, seven of the 27 beneficiary companies are based in Tamil Nadu, reinforcing the state’s growing prominence in electronics production.

Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw, who was also present at the event, reiterated the government’s commitment to positioning India as a global electronics powerhouse.

Zetwerk Electronics Expands Footprint

Zetwerk Electronics’ new facility in Sriperumbudur aims to contribute significantly to India’s manufacturing growth, aligning with the government’s vision for “Make in India” and self-reliance in electronics production.

“Zetwerk’s new unit will undoubtedly play a key role in India’s $500 billion electronics manufacturing goal,” Krishnan added.

The expansion of electronics production in Tamil Nadu is expected to create thousands of jobs and strengthen India’s export capabilities, making the state a crucial player in the country’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

Focus on Emerging Technologies

Following the factory inauguration, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) in Thaiyur, where he reviewed the Hyperloop test facility and interacted with faculty and students.

The government’s emphasis on cutting-edge technology and innovation is expected to complement its push for large-scale manufacturing, reinforcing India’s ambition to lead in the global electronics market.

With a robust policy framework, strategic investments, and growing infrastructure, India is on course to transform its electronics sector into the largest manufacturing industry worldwide.
